           Two NMI women represent in Obama foundation leader in Asia pacific program. In totals of 200 leaders out of 33 nations and territories in the region participated in the Obama foundation leaders program. Sheila J. Babauta and Samantha Birmingham-Babauta were both selected to participate in the program from Dec. 10, 2019, to Dec. 14, 2019. in the 200 participants, 10 are from Micronesia: Four from Guam, two from the CNMI, one each for Palau and the Federated States of Micronesia, and two for the Republic of Marshall Islands.

According to the article Birmingham Birmingham-Babauta is an advocate for health in the Pacific, where she actively works to promote physical activity as a low-cost intervention, especially for non-communicable diseases, in the community. Birmingham-Babauta interned with the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention after graduating from Cal State Northridge with her degree in kinesiology. Since, Sami has worked in higher education, in non-profit, and in the government sector to explore innovative ways to improve community health through outreach, education, and health policies. She believes that through everyday individual actions people can contribute to the betterment of their communities.

furthermore, Sheila J. Babauta serves in the 21st CNMI Legislature as a representative for Precinct 4 — the community that raised her. Her mission to inspire positive change through responsible leadership focuses on efforts to conserve and enhance the natural beauty of our environment, develop a diverse and vibrant economy, and provide a safe and healthy community for all. As a product of the Public School System and a graduate of the University of Hawai’i at Manoa with a background in finance and international business, she believes in small, yet significant, changes that contribute to a better CNMI that we can proudly pass on to the next generation.         

The Obama Foundation is a scholar program that inspires, empower, and connects young leaders around the world to change their world. The participant form CNMI is already making a difference in their community. Now they will take this opportunity to work on the next level to bring together the skills to improve our community.

Digital Media Blog 12/12/2019 Current issues #8 US cities are losing 36 million trees a year.  According to CNN trees cover in US cities are shrinking. A study published last year by the US Forest Service found that we lost 36 million trees annually from urban and rural communities over a five-year period. That's a 1% drop from 2009 to 2014. If we continue on this path, "cities will become warmer, more polluted and generally more unhealthy for inhabitants," said David Nowak, a senior US Forest Service scientist and co-author of the study.
